Brand Origin

ECHUAN did not begin with a grand statement.

It began with a simple question:

If there were a wine we would place our name on, drink for years, recommend with confidence, and build over time — what should it be like?

ECHUAN is our answer.

First, it should be a wine worth drinking. Then, it can become an expression of land, time, and people.

One Land. Many Expressions.

One land, many expressions.

Wine map of China

Across China, vineyards stretch from roughly 18° to 53° north latitude, crossing deserts, mountains, plateaus, inland basins, and coastal regions.

Each landscape has the potential to shape its own wine language.

For ECHUAN, the future of Chinese wine is not only about making good wine, but also about allowing the world to see the diversity of China’s mountains, rivers, and vineyard terroirs.

Ningxia landscape between Helan Mountains and Yellow River

Why Ningxia

Before there was a vineyard, there was the land.

Ningxia’s Helan Mountain East Foothill region is a place where mountains meet rivers. To the west stand the Helan Mountains; to the east lie the Yellow River and the Yinchuan Plain.

Desert air, mountain wind, sunlight, and diurnal temperature shifts work together to create a distinctive environment for winegrowing.

ECHUAN’s first wine begins here, with a Marselan grape beneath the Helan Mountains.

What ECHUAN seeks is not weight or force, but restraint within ripeness, elegance within structure, and a quiet expression that begins in the land.

Yongning, Sanguankou pass, and the Helan Mountain East Foothill region

Why Yongning

Why Yongning, and why this block.

ECHUAN’s first Marselan is not simply from Ningxia. More precisely, it comes from Yongning, within the Helan Mountain East Foothill wine region.

The block sits near Sanguankou, a natural opening in the Helan Mountains. Wind passes through this gap and brings clearer air movement to the vineyard.

Just across a wall from the block is the Xixia Reservoir, around 3,000 mu in size, or roughly 200 hectares. Together, the mountain wind and reservoir help temper summer heat and create a cooler, more delicate microclimate for Marselan.

A specific place, shaped by a mountain pass and nearby water.

Marselan Block

The Marselan block

ECHUAN’s first wine comes from a Marselan block in Yongning. Light, mountain wind, and dry air allow the fruit to reach maturity while keeping clarity of aroma and structure.

From Vine to Vineyard

Returning to the soil

Pruned vine cuttings, winemaking by-products, and native wild plants are returned to the vineyard as organic matter.

This is not an added environmental narrative, but part of the estate’s internal ecological cycle. The grapes come from the land, and in another form, they return to the land.

2021 Vintage

A year of ripeness and precision.

Spring rain and cool temperatures provided a balanced start to the growing season. From June to September, warm and dry conditions encouraged even ripening and healthy fruit development.

Hand harvesting began in late August, allowing each cluster to reach the winery at ideal maturity. The resulting Marselan expresses pure fruit, refined structure, and ageing potential.

Winemaking

Hand-selected fruit, fermented with precision.

We seek to preserve the purity and clarity of Marselan. The wine is matured in French oak barrels for six months, followed by eighteen months of bottle ageing, allowing fruit, structure, and oak to integrate with restraint.

Restraint and Elegance

A more demanding path.

Together with Chief Winemaker Zhou Shuzhen, we chose a more demanding path — to let Marselan be remembered for its elegance and restraint, rather than its power.

This does not mean lightness. It means allowing ripeness, structure, fruit, and oak to remain in their right place.

ECHUAN

ECHUAN begins with a grape beneath the Helan Mountains — a wine shaped by terroir, ecology, and time.

But what ECHUAN seeks is not only to make a Ningxia wine. It is to explore more diverse expressions of China’s landscapes.

Wine is only a medium. What ECHUAN truly cares about is the relationship between people and the wider world.

Through wine, we explore the landscapes of China and the journeys within ourselves.
